Why are gutters important?
Are you wondering whether or not you need gutters? Many knowledgeable professionals from home builders to foundation repair contractors all agree that gutters are a very important aspect to the health of your entire home. Gutters have one job…to move water away from your home so the integrity of the structure does not suffer from water damage. When water is not diverted away from your home properly…all types of problems can develop:
- Leaks and/or flooded basement or crawlspace
- Cracked, uneven, or damaged foundation
- Soil erosion around the home
- Rotting fascia boards
- Mold and mildew growth inside and outside
- Moist environment attracts termites and other insects
- Staining on the exterior of the home, siding, or masonry
- Settling and cracking of sidewalks, driveways, and other concrete
These problems can be avoided by making sure gutters are properly installed around your entire home and that the downspouts are directing water at least 3 feet away from the base of the building. Any distance of less than 3 feet is just dumping water from your roof onto the ground and next to your foundation. The biggest design flaw with a gutter system is that it’s open. This means that almost anything can get in there and unless you take preventative steps to protect them they can be a lot of work to maintain. Many homeowners clean their gutters once a year, but experts actually recommend twice per year as an average requirement: Spring and Fall. If you have heavy vegetation around your home, then you may need to clean more often than that.
If your gutters look more like Niagara Falls during a rainstorm or a rooftop garden instead of a system designed to protect your home from water damage, then you already know why gutter guards are important. Unprotected gutters will fill with debris from surrounding trees or debris carried on the wind. No matter where you live, nature’s elements will find a way into your gutters and lead to serious problems.
When a gutter clogs…it fills with water and overflows; defeating its purpose. Issues caused by debris collecting in your gutters are:
- Water overflow leading to foundation damage and soil erosion
- Build-up of dry debris is a fire hazard
- Water leaking into your attic and walls
- Standing water creates the perfect habitat for mosquitoes
- Moisture problems that encourage mold growth and termite/pest infestation
The good news…THERE IS A SOLUTION! The Shur Flo gutter protection system offers you the perfect answer to prevent leaves and debris from clogging your gutters while optimizing water flow and keeping out all debris…including pine needles.
Rainwater from your roof drains through the patented perf-flow filtration system while leaves, pine needles, twigs, and even the smallest debris are suspended on top of the panel. Air circulation from above and below will allow the leaves and debris to dry up and blow away in the wind.
Shur Flo is installed to fit snugly to the top of your gutters and its low profile makes it virtually invisible from the ground. With Shur Flo, there is no lifting or penetration of your roof shingles and the Shur Flo gutter protection system will not void any roof warranties.
